Professor M. Pilar Laguna qualified in medicine from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain), in 1979. Following completion of his training as urologists she joined the medical staff at hospital del Sagrado Corazon and later at Fundacio Puigvert in Barcelona. She was appointed chairperson at the Department of Urology of the Hospital General La Mancha Centro in Alcazar de San Juan in 1995 and moved in 2000 to the Netherlands.
She defended his PhD thesis in the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on “Sigmoid Neobladder after Radical Cystectomy” with the grade of “Cum Laude” Doctor in Medicine in 2001. Being one of the first female’s pioneers in the field of Urology her carrier culminated in 2014 when she was appointed as the first female full Professor in Uro-Oncology in the AMC University of Amsterdam and later on at Istanbul Medipol University where she works currently.
Across the years she has actively collaborated with the most prominent Urological societies. She has been the chair of the Awards committee of the Endourological Society and of the Institutes and Scholarships office of the SIU. She was the chair of the Ablative Working Party of the EAU section of Uro-technology (ESUT) Focal therapy subcommittee and has served for three non-consecutive terms as chairperson of the EAU Testicular Cancer guideline. His collaboration and commitment with the EAU Testicular Cancer guidelines panel lasted for almost 25 years, since the inception of the EAU Guidelines in 1998 until 2022.
Her main interest is on Renal and Testicular cancer, and she was the chair of the CROES Renal mass registry and board member of the UTUC registry of the Endourological Society. She has published more than 500 peer-reviewed articles in the field of urology, with special focus on minimally invasive therapies and Uro-oncology. She is co-editor of a book on Testicular cancer and of more than 20 book chapters. She belongs to the editorial board at large of European Urology and to the Urological Survey Section of The Journal of Urology and act as a reviewer for the main urological journals.
At the present she shares her time between education and clinics in the School of Medicine at Istanbul Medipol University .
